MS Build AI Day Keynote by Scott Hanselman
On October 19, 2023, the inaugural MS Build AI Day at Excel London in Custom House marked a pivotal moment for the world of AI. As an attendee, I had the privilege of witnessing a groundbreaking keynote session led by none other than Scott Hanselman. Titled “Navigating the AI Landscape,” the keynote, introduced by Michael Wignall, the lead for MS Build, set the stage for an eventful day filled with insights, connections, and hands-on experiences.
Scott Hanselman delved into the omnipresence of AI in our lives. He addressed the common fears and apprehensions surrounding this evolving technology. Drawing on a humorous analogy from his own life, Scott painted a vivid picture of being a Language Learning Model (LLM) in a 25-year-long partnership, illustrating how they’ve grown so attuned they can finish each other’s sandwiches.
Scott playfully likened ChatGPT to becoming Kleenex for tissue for AI. A live demo on the Azure Open AI playground showcased the immense potential of this technology. Scott discussed the uncanny valley of creepiness, emphasizing that unspoken context can sometimes lead to eerie outcomes unless sufficient context is provided. AI infers from information/date it is being trained from unless more context or information is provided to it.
The discussion then turned to the ethical use of AI. Scott characterized AI as a soft puppet sock, capable of great help or potential harm depending on how it is used. He emphasized the importance of responsibility in AI development, advocating for clear communication and guidance.
Amy Kate Boyd joined Scott to discuss temperature in AI, explaining that higher temperatures lead to more random and creative outputs, while lower temperatures favor more predictable outcome. Temperature can be set to any number from 0 to 2 in the OpenAI playground with 0 providing very specific and predictable results and 2 yielding random results. They used the OpenAI playground to show the effect of using different temperature values.
They shed light on tokens, which are the building blocks of AI understanding, and clarified that behind the scenes, AI processes numbers, not words.
The Significance of Grounding and Prompt Engineering
Grounding, Scott emphasized, is crucial for obtaining accurate and relevant responses from AI. He underscored the importance of prompt engineering in ensuring AI delivers the desired outcomes.
Layers of Defense and Safety Measures
Scott detailed the various layers of defense in AI models, highlighting OpenAI’s commitment to safety. Metaprompt and grounding at the application layer ensure user-friendly experiences, with Bing serving as an example with its three-section approach for reference filtering and interrogation.
The mitigation layers are:
- Model:LLM (Large Language Model)
- Safety system prompt: safety check to help stop hate, violence and stay polite
- Metaprompt & Grounding: the end user prompt
- User experience: interaction with the end user
Jailbreaking and Responsible AI
The concept of “jailbreaking” was introduced, reminding users to respect the rules set in place via the System Prompt

Scott emphasized that, like any tool, AI requires responsible usage. He stressed that AI is a tool, not a replacement for human judgment.
In the above example , the OpenAI was misguided with the system prompt yielding an impolite message.

Scott advised against using exponentially large models when a smaller model suffices. For instance, a coffee shop query doesn’t require the computing power of larger models, illustrating the importance of tailored AI applications.
AI Orchestration and Data Privacy
Scott delved into AI orchestration, highlighting the role of semantic kernels in facilitating communication between models. He emphasized the importance of private LLM to safeguard sensitive data, ensuring Azure-hosted systems remain secure.

One of the standout features of GitHub Copilot is its integration of IRC-style slash commands. Commands like /help and /explain provide instant access to guidance and explanations, making the platform incredibly user-friendly. Jolynn highlighted a fascinating occurrence when a comment is selected, copilot did not work as expected but was able to explain a whole file of code, helpful for reverse engineering.

Joylynn Kirui demonstrated how Copilot excels at test case generation with the simple command /tests. This functionality can significantly expedite the testing phase of development, saving time and effort for developers.

By asking a simple question, “Is the code secure?” developers can access a formatted results table, providing clear insights into potential risks.
