SharePoint Limited Access User Permission Lockdown Mode: Desktop App Edit Issue with sharing link
The Issue
SharePoint’s “Limited Access User Permission Lockdown Mode” feature introduces an unexpected side effect that can frustrate users and disrupt workflows. When this security feature is enabled, users who receive sharing links with edit permissions find themselves unable to edit files in desktop applications, despite having the necessary permissions.
What Happens
Expected Behavior: User receives an edit link, opens the file in Word/Excel/PowerPoint desktop app, and can modify the document.
Actual Behavior: File opens as read-only in the desktop application, preventing any edits despite having edit permissions through the sharing link.
Why This Occurs
The Limited Access User Permission Lockdown Mode is designed to enhance security by restricting what limited access users can view and access. However, this security mechanism interferes with the authentication flow between SharePoint and Office desktop applications, causing the apps to treat the file as read-only.
Recommendation
Organizations should carefully evaluate whether to enable Limited Access User Permission Lockdown Mode, considering the trade-off between enhanced security and user productivity. Document this limitation and train users on alternative editing methods if the feature remains enabled.
