Remove user from someone else’s OneDrive site

  1. Easiest to do this by getting the owner of the OneDrive to do it. Follow these steps a. From their OneDrive b. Either paste this to end of URL /_layouts/15/people.aspx?MembershipGroupId=0 then go to ‘j’ or follow these steps c. Settings d. OneDrive Settings e. More Settings f. Site Collection Admins (this switches you to the classic OneDrive admin screen) g. Settings(top right) h. Site settings i. People and groups j. search for person with issue then delete

  2. If you need to do it for them (eg person away / uncontactable / senior leader etc).

  3. First - generate an access link from the admin center for their OneDrive (get necessary permission to do this).

  4. Create the URL for the permissions list a. https://contoso-my.sharepoint.com/:w:/r/personal/ b. <name of person who owns the OneDrive (not the person having problems) in this format > jude_osei-assibey_bankofengland_co_uk (should be able to get this from the link that the user was having trouble with) c. Add /_layouts/15/people.aspx?MembershipGroupId=0 at the end

  5. So it will look something like this: https://contoso-my.sharepoint.com/:w:/r/personal/test_wonder_contoso_co_uk/_layouts/15/people.aspx?MembershipGroupId=0

  6. Find the person you want to remove and click the checkbox to select them

  7. Then click ‘Actions’ at the top

  8. Select ‘Delete user from site collection’

  9. then Yes to the warning message.

  10. The user should now be able to access the original link to the document, or have it resent to them.

This is usually because the person has left and re-joined the bank, or possibly been a contractor to permanent staff or if their profile has been deleted and recreated for some reason. It’s a frustrating loop situation that seems to be an obvious fix, but then isn’t :D

Happens in OneDrive too This has happened with OneDrive documents too. For OneDrive, you can skip the initial checks below and go straight to ‘Remove user…’

Also once you have diagnosed once for a user, it is likely to be a problem again. It could also affect Collaborate (SharePoint 2010)

We are going to try to work with JML to get to the source of this issue and stop it from happening.
